mascaret

common noun

Syllable Decomposition

mascaret

From Occitan mascaret (speckled, smeared) derived from mascar ("speckled with black"). In Old French, mascarer had the meaning of "to smudge". Some give Occitan the meaning of "speckled ox" and derive the meaning of "wave" by analogy between a herd of cattle moving and a mascaret; note that this word is related to masse (see mascher) and its meaning is "a mass of water in the form of a bar".
