martyr

from martyr, originating from the ancient Greek μάρτυς/-υρος ("witness"). It appears in Old French in the form martir around (1050) and also in the form martre which will remain present in many place names: montmartre, martroi, martroy, martrai, martrei, martray, les martres and sometimes les marthes. These names indicate in most cases ancient burial or torture sites.
