Science of environments, which studies in an interdisciplinary manner the relationship of living beings in general, or human beings in particular, with their environment.
In its first sense, the oldest, 'milieu' is synonymous with 'environment', that is, the objective and universal environmental given that is today the subject of ecology. The first edition of the Petit Larousse (1906) could thus define mesology as 'the part of biology that studies the relationships between environments and organisms'.
In a second sense, emerging under the influence of phenomenology in the works of Jakob von Uexküll and Tetsurō Watsuji (see below 'History of the word'), the French mesology is synonymous with the German Umweltlehre and the Japanese fûdogaku 風土学. Here, the milieu (Umwelt, fûdo) is not the objective environmental given (Umgebung, shizen kankyô 自然環境), but the terms in which it exists for a certain being (individual, society, species...). It is the reality of the surrounding world specific to that being, and not to others. The milieu is therefore singular, while the environment is universal. Consequently, mesology is not ecology.
