from Old French mescheant (ill-falling), which originally meant 'unlucky'; the modern sense of 'having a tendency to do harm' is attested from the 14th century. (12th century) mescheant. see mescheoir 'to fall badly'. since then, the present participle cheant/chéant of the verb choir has disappeared.
