Syllable Decomposition
lutinfirst attested, in Old French, in the form netun, altered to nuiton (under the influence of nuit), then luiton, from luitier, "to wrestle", and finally lutin by changing the suffix. The word seems to go back to the Latin neptunus, god of the sea, classified as a demon in the early Middle Ages.
