lessivelissive (14th century) by dissimilation of the first /i/ into /ɛ/: lessive ('alkaline solution used to wash dirty linen') derives from the Latin lixiva (aqua) ('solution based on ash used for washing'), substantivation of the adjective lixivus derived from lix or lixa ('hot water for washing'). Old French also had buée which survives with the meaning of 'laundry' in certain dialects.
