lapalissade

common noun

Syllable Decomposition

lapalissade

derived with the suffix -ade from the name of jacques ii de chabannes de la palice (or la palisse) on which a popular song composed, it is said, by his soldiers and filled with obvious truths ("truths of la palisse"), such as "a quarter of an hour before his death, he was still alive". They meant to say that he had fought like a lion until the wound that felled him in a quarter of an hour. But another explanation would be a misreading of the words inscribed on his tomb: "he would still be envied".
