From Latin jumentum (« harness ») from jugum (« yoke ») then taking the meaning of « beast of burden or draught ». This word kept the meaning of « beast of burden » in Old French which named the female horse by one or the other of the two old words cavale (from Vulgar Latin caballus) and ive (from Classical Latin equa). The meaning of « female horse » is attested from the second half of the 12th century (1174).
