from English jumbo (elephantine) which could be of African origin through the intermediary of African Americans. The word was chosen as the name of an elephant (see jumbo (elephant) on Wikipedia) from the London zoo purchased in 1882 by the Barnum circus, then applied to things of large dimensions.
