jaseran

common noun

Syllable Decomposition

jaseran

from Old French jazerant, from Old Occitan jaseran; attested in Spanish and Portuguese as jacerina, in Italian as ghïazzerino. The philologist Friedrich Diez, noting that in Spanish jazarino means ('Algerian'), from Arabic al-jazaïr ('Algiers'), and remarking that it is said that Algiers made excellent chain mail, supposed that jaseran could mean ('Algerian, from Algiers'). But this etymology, generally adopted, is not attested by any text.
