Syllable Decomposition

houligan

French adaptation of "hooligan" derived from Russian хулиган houligane ("thug, rascal, young opponent of the Soviet regime") via English hooligan (1898). Other sources (Clarence Rook, Hooligan Nights, 1899) trace the origin to a certain Patrick Hooligan, a small-time criminal from the borough of London, sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a policeman, or (Earnest Weekley, Romance of Words, 1912) to the Irish Hooligan family of Southwark, London.
