hotu

from Middle Dutch houtic, referring to a fish, the whitefish, via Walloon « hôtitche » (a name known in the 20th century along the Meuse, from Eben-Emael to Andenne, on the Ourthe up to Houffalize, and on the Amblève) then « hôtu » (rest of the Walloon-speaking Meuse basin); the word entered the French lexicon in 1873, with the mention "regional word from the north."
