harangue

common noun

Syllable Decomposition

harangue

from Italian arringa ("public speech") formerly aringa, at the origin of the old Occitan arengua and the Catalan arenga (same meanings), both attested around 1300. Probably formed on ar(r)ingo ("arena", "public square, gathering place"), which itself comes, with an intercalated a, from Gothic *hriggs (pronounced *hrings) corresponding to Old Low Franconian hring ("circle, ring"). See gringue for a word derived from this same root or ring, via English.
