hampe
common noun
since 1471-72 (« wooden handle to which the iron of a polearm, a cross, or a flag is attached »). from Norman hante (from 1165-70 « javelin, spear, spear shaft, handle, stem »). Diez distinguishes hampe from hante; he derives hampe from German handhabe, a handle (from hand: « hand », and haben: « to have », hence hantbe).
