hôtel
common noun
Syllable Decomposition
hôtelfrom 'host', which derives from the Latin hospes, hospitis ('the one who gives hospitality') from the Latin hospitale [cubiculum] ('hospitable [chamber]' to receive guests). In the Middle Ages, it still has the meaning of 'a place of welcome for guests, a hospital' (see hôtel-dieu) before losing it in favor of 'inn', except in the monastic world and designates almost exclusively a 'noble residence'. It is then often written 'ostel' on the one hand because the Latin 'h' is silent and probably by contamination with 'ost' (the nobility is then warrior). It loses its 's', which has not been pronounced since the end of the 12th century, in favor of a circumflex accent in 1740. It regains its initial meaning in the 19th century and gradually ousts the meaning of 'noble residence'.
