from Old Low Franconian wimpil ('headscarf') reconstructed from Old High German wimpal (theristrum), Middle Dutch wumpel (headgear), and German wimpel (pennant). The word was originally masculine but the feminine form became dominant. This can be explained by the ending -le, but there is also Old High German winfila ('headscarf') (9th century) which suggests that the origin comes from an Old Low Franconian wimpila feminine.
