feminine of the Latin clarus (clear) which designated the "egg white" perhaps crossed with the Latin glarea (gravel). Spanish has clara, Provençal has glarea, Italian has chiara ("mucus, egg white"), and ghiaia, ghiara ("gravel"), in Venetian giara, means only "sandbank".
