common noun
from the Latin gito, the name of a young homosexual character in Petronius' Satyricon. The word appears in French under the pen of Voltaire in the Anti-Giton. It had the sense of 'page, valet' in Old French. Perhaps related to the Greek γείτονας ('neighbor').
