attested in the form galde, waudee, from the Germanic walda (« reseda ») which gave galda in Spanish, gauda in Old Catalan, gualde, gualdo in Portuguese and gualda in Italian; further, related to Middle Dutch woude (« id. »), to English weld (« id. »), to German wau (« id. ») which succeeded the Latin lutum (« dyer's weld, yellow color »). The extension of the word suggests that walda must have passed very early into Vulgar Latin, undoubtedly following the importation of this dye from Germania or through the intermediary of the Germanic workforce employed by the important textile industry concentrated in the lower course of the Rhine.
