gamme

common noun

Syllable Decomposition

gamme

from gamma, the name of the third letter of the Greek alphabet, which corresponds to our g. In the 11th century the notes of the scale of sounds were indicated by the letters a, b, c, d, e, f, g, a, b, c, d, e, f, g, aa, bb, cc, dd. The letter a corresponded to the low la of the violin's bass string, or to the low la of the cello. Then a cord was added even lower than this la, the low sol of the cello, and it was designated by the Greek, so as not to reuse the g or the g. It is Gui d'Arezzo himself who says this in his Micrologus: in primis ponitur graecum a modernis adjunctum. The gamma then starting the series of sounds, we have given this series the name of 'gamme'.
