from Old Low Franconian brambasi 'blackberry' (see brombeere in German), composed of brāmo 'bramble' (see braam, 'wild blackberry' in Dutch) and basi 'berry' (see bezie, 'berry' in Dutch). The phonetic evolution from /br-/ to /fr-/ is explained by the influence of fraise.
