attested in Judeo-French as forgon in the glosses of Rashi; from a popular Latin furico, -onis derived from furicare ('to rummage'), from the Latin furari ('to steal'), from fur ('thief', see ferret). See fourguer. Auguste Scheler makes it the lexical doublet of fourchon (see bouche and bougon regarding the ending in -gon)
