forge

common noun

Syllable Decomposition

forge

from Latin fabrica which also gives fabrique. The /a/ has been preserved in some Romance forms, and, in our case, in the proper name, Lafarge, which is equivalent to la forge. Forges, name of a locality in Normandy, was said in Latin fabriciae, in a text from 790, Forges, hamlet in the district of Loches, is said fabricae; in a charter from 1286 the carrefore des forges is in Latin bivium fabricarum. Forge is the almost regular form for fabrica; the only irregularity is the loss of the /b/ but, -ica being rendered by -ge (see pedica, piège), the /b/ became incompatible: there could not be fabrge, and the /b/ fell.
