flibustier

common noun

from the English 'freebooter', literally 'free looter' (from 'booty', 'loot, capture, prey'). The same formation is found in Dutch 'vrijbuiter' and in German 'freibeuter'. The borrowing is probably from the time when the English and French were vying for the West Indies in the 17th century.
