enquête
common noun
Syllable Decomposition
enquêtefrom the Latin inquisita, the feminine past participle of inquirere, substantivized in the Middle Ages in the form inquaesita, inquesta, which gives the Old French enqueste (ca 1170). The Latin inquirere is a see in- and quaerere "regularized" to align quérir and its derivatives see requérir and enquérir. This last verb, of the third group, even regularized, remains irregular; it was applied the "solutionner rule": a first-group derivative was made, enquêter.
