derived from the Late Latin inodiare, formed on the expression in odio esse "to be an object of hatred" from classical Latin. ennui meant in the 12th century "torment", then "deep sadness, grief, disgust" to gradually take, by weakening, that of "mental fatigue, lack of taste, of pleasure".
