coquerather than from the Latin concha (shell) which also gave rise to conque, from the Latin coccum (cochineal, a parasite forming a small globular excrescence resembling a seed). Some uses of coccum are close to the French coque: coccum cnidium ('fruit of the garou'), coccum also has the meaning of 'pine cone', in the eleventh century, the Latin cocca is attested with the meaning of 'cup, vessel of hemispherical shape'.
