conjurateur

adjectivecommon noun

Syllable Decomposition

conjurateur

from Latin conjurator (a person bound by oath). Vaugelas in his remarks condemned conjurateur in the sense of "conspirator, person who forms a conspiracy": "what has misled those who first said conjurateur is that, the ending being active and that of conjuré passive, they thought that the verbal noun which had the ending should be used to express an action." Littré notes "the fact is that today conjuré has completely banished conjurateur from usage."
