from the late Latin cofia (headdress, bonnet), of obscure origin, perhaps Germanic. The dictionaries of the French Academy had coeffe as the headword in 1694 and 1718 and coiffe as a variant; in 1798, the relationship was reversed, and from 1835 onwards, only coiffe was mentioned.
