chrétien

Syllable Decomposition

chrétien

from Latin christianus, itself coming from ancient Greek χριστιανός christianos (little christ), from χριστός or χριστός, christos. It was in Antioch, around the year 43 (cf. Acts of the Apostles, chapter 11 v.26) that the disciples of Jesus Christ were called 'Christians' for the first time. In Old French, the s of Christ is preserved, in the spelling chrestien, but the use and the phonetic deformation will lead to abandon the s to replace it with an acute accent on the e, hence the current spelling chrétien.
