According to the Trésor de la Langue Française informatisé, the hypothesis of the Spanish algarabía, itself derived from the Arabic العربية al arabīya (the Arabic language), is less plausible. The most likely hypothesis is that it is derived from the Occitan charrar, meaning 'to chat, to converse'.
