chaloupe
common nounverb
Syllable Decomposition
chaloupeFigurative use of the dialectal chalope, attested in Middle French with chaloppe, "walnut shell, kernel skin" (see chalouppe, "shellfish"), derived by apheresis from Old French eschalope ("shell"), itself derived from eschale (see écale) with the ending of enveloppe. The etymological relationships of chaloupe with the Gascon radical calup, galup are obscure in the event that the two types are related.
