cardinal

Syllable Decomposition

cardinal

From Latin cardinalis ("relating to a hinge", "cardinal, principal"), derived from cardo ("pivot", "hinge"). The meaning was "something on which one can rely" in the literal sense at first, and nowadays in the figurative sense. The cardinal numbers were named thus because they seemed more important, the cardinals are priests on whom the church relies.
