Spelling used in the English-speaking world for the French word 'cadian' and adopted by most Francophones outside of Louisiana, while Louisianans remain faithful to the spelling 'cadian(ne)', closer to the derivative of 'Acadian'. This spelling results from the local pronunciation /ka.dʒɛ̃/ (« cadjin »). The ancient pronunciation was /ka.jɛ̃/ (« cayen »), like 'acayen' and 'canayen' (which can still be heard in Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia today).
