cajou

common noun

Syllable Decomposition

cajou

From Guarani, Tupi-Guarani aca-iu transformed into caju in Portuguese from which it passed into French. In France, the form "cajou" is preferred over the form "acajou" to avoid any confusion, as cashew trees do not belong to the family of trees called mahogany. In some Francophone regions of West Africa, the form "acajou" is predominant in usage. The name "cajou" is rarely used alone. It is generally found in expressions like "cashew nut".
