cadeau
common noun
Syllable Decomposition
cadeauEither from the old Occitan word catellus ("small chain"), a diminutive of catena ("chain"), due to the chained form of pen strokes. Gilles Ménage tells us that "to give gifts" was said to mean "to do specious but useless things", metaphorically compared to these hand-written strokes of the masters. From there, it is easy to move to "cadeau" in the sense of "entertainment, party" and, finally, "present".
