cacher
verbadjective
Syllable Decomposition
cacherfrom the Latin coacto (to constrain) which gave the frequentative coacticare ("to compress, to press") in Vulgar Latin and quachier, cachier in Old French. The Old French escachier still had the meaning of "to crush"; the sense of "to conceal", rare until the sixteenth century, is derived from that of "to press, to compress"; this verb eventually supplanted the older verbs escondre, esconser, puter and musser in this sense.
