bruler
verb
Syllable Decomposition
brulertraditionally "to burn". The Latin translation is urere with a participle ustus (see ustion for a derivative in French); prefixed with per-, it gave perurere with a frequent modification in perustare, syncoped in prustare of which the Italian form is directly derived, the diminutive form prustolare (see the French "ustulation" for an unprefixed form, derived from this diminutive) gave bruslar in Old French then brusler by elision of the t, then "brûler" and finally "bruler" following the 1990 spelling reform.
