brandon

appears with the meaning of "burning torch (of straw) to light (or set fire to)". It is a derivative in -on of the Old French brande (flame) or brant ("firebrand"), related to brander ("to shine, blaze"); brant did not persist because of its homonymy with brant ("sword" see brandish). The English brand, the German Brand ("fire") are related to it; the Old Catalan brandó (1296), the Spanish blandón ("torch") (1493) are loanwords from the Old Occitan brandon also of the same origin.
