from Latin bibo dif=bĭbĕre (dif=bĭbĕre). in Old French, bevvre ((10th century)), beivre, boivre, then boire. the root bev- (bevons, bevez, bevant) became beuv- then buv- by labialization. beuv- was preserved in beuverie (see breuvage).
