Syllable Decomposition

blet

rare adjective before the sixteenth century; 1611 'poire blette' (cotgr.), reformation based on adjectives ending in -et, -ette, from Old French 'blece', feminine 'blette' derived from 'blecier' ('to wound' see this word) taken in the sense of 'bruised' (referring to olives, apples to make them ripen). In Old French, only the feminine form (or almost) is attested because the known fruits had names that were almost exclusively feminine.
