blaireau

common noun

Syllable Decomposition

blaireau

from Late Old French blarel (1312), a nominal derivative in -el of the adjective bler, blaire "stained" (applied to any animal having a white spot on the forehead). This term is related to the postulated Gaulish blaros, based on Scottish Gaelic blar "pale" and Welsh blawr "(horse) gray", which probably crossed with Old Low Franconian blari (cf. Dutch blaar "white blaze", related to English blaze, of the same meaning). The word blaireau has supplanted the Old French taisse or taisson, derived from Gaulish tasgos.
