Louis Réard invented the bikini and presented it for the first time in Paris on July 5, 1946. He claimed to have chosen this name in reference to the Bikini Atoll, where a nuclear explosion had taken place five days earlier, hoping that the fashion effect of this new product would be comparable to that of the explosion that had just occurred.
