belette

common noun

Syllable Decomposition

belette

The etymology of this term is consensual among philologists: from belle and the suffix -ette, perhaps to conjure the misdeeds of this animal; this propitious form is found in English fairy, German schöntierlein ("beautiful little animal") or Italian donnola ("little woman"). Belette has ultimately supplanted the old French moustoile, derived from the Latin mŭstēla. Some authors, in the minority, have suggested another origin.
