Syllable Decomposition

baragouin

According to the most widely accepted theory, this word comes from the Breton words bara ("bread") and gwin ("wine") or gwin, the old masculine form of gwenn (white). This derogatory term appeared in the Middle Ages. It is attested in 1396, the year of the marriage of Jeanne de France to Jean V of Brittany and under the pen of Rabelais (1532, see Pantagruel). Other etymologies have also been proposed.
