First attested in the form beteille and the sense of "a tonic and astringent chewable made essentially of leaves of a species of pepper": all day long both men and women eat a leaf called beteille, which makes the mouth red and the teeth black; there are also [at Calicut] all kinds of fragrances, and a thousand types of simples, such as rhubarb, agaric, storax, myrrh, aloe, Indian leaf, which they call betel, and similar things.
