aveugle
adjectivecommon noun
Syllable Decomposition
aveuglefrom Old French avogle, aveule, from Vulgar Latin ab oculis "without eyes" (5th-6th c., Acts of Peter with Simon), probably a calque of Gaulish exs-ops "blind". A semi-scholarly evolution compared to aveuil, a popular outcome continued in the Berrichon dialect. It eliminated cieu and orb in Old French, from classical Latin caecus ("blind") and orbus ("deprived", "lacking").
