from the phrase, formerly pleonastic 'au jour d'hui' where 'hui' meant 'on this day', like the Latin 'hodie' from which it comes. integrated into the French language approximately in the 16th century. nowadays, 'hui' has disappeared from French and the word has lost its pleonastic character.
