artisan

common noun

Syllable Decomposition

artisan

borrowed, at the time of the Renaissance, from Italian artigiano, itself derived from Latin ars, artis ("art"), and the ending -anus. Originally, the "artisan" is the one who puts his art at the service of others. This word has the same origin as artist, of which it was synonymous until the end of the 17th century. Subsequently, artist has been applied to those who used their art for pleasure, while artisan has been linked to the commercial spirit. Today, we speak of "mason artisan", "carpenter artisan", etc., but "painter artist", "musical artist", etc., without mixing the two.
