From darrobe, itself from the Spanish and Portuguese arroba which designated a unit of weight, in turn derived from the Arabic ar roub, 'the quarter' because this unit of weight represented a quarter of a unit of about fifty kilos. The popular etymology claiming that this word is a contraction of 'a rond bas de casse' is unfounded.
